<image:caption>Summary: This study looks at the effects of completing a 30-Day Mindfulness program but participants share the characteristic of being in a transitory period of their life (student life). This study pairs up 2 students from the Claremont Colleges consortium (one 1st-year undergraduate student with one graduate student) to investigate effects of dual-participation in a study for accountability as well as effects on emotion, well-being, happiness, and other factors. Principal Investigators: Saida Heshmati and Marcus Rodriguez Project Lead: Jaymes Paolo Rombaoa Research Assistants: Ezra Isabel Cabreros (Claremont Graduate University), Yilin Li (Pitzer College), Lila Avendano Dreyfuss (Pitzer College), Lizbeth Valdivia-Jauregu (Scripps College), Julia Ho (Pitzer College), Jenna Ledbetter (Pitzer College)</image:caption>

<image:title>Online Self Compassion and Mental Health - Online Self Compassion Training and Impacts on Mental Health Outcomes</image:title>
<image:caption>Summary: Currently, three studies are examining the efficacy of cost effective, low-intensity self compassion trainings and their impacts on various mental health outcomes. Popularized by Dr. Kristen Neff, two decades of research concerning the concept of self-compassion has identified its various physiological and psychosocial benefits (Neff, Hsieh & Dejitterat, 2005). These studies aim to assess the use of online-based self-compassion trainings for improving the negative outcomes of perfectionism in college students, reducing burnout among humanitarian populations, and reducing depression and anxiety among college students in China. For this study, we are developing a measure based on Marsha Linehan’s (1997) six levels of validation. The study will use pairs of parents and children to examine the relationship between parents’ use of validation and their children’s difficulties with emotion regulation. <image:caption>Summary: Can people receive psychological support and counseling from their peers in a high quality, useful and time-saving way? This longitudinal study investigates the validity of a peer-counseling training course based on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) among a group of Chinese college students. We collected data before, after, and one year after the course taught by Dr. Rodriguez at Peking University in 2019. We are also tracking how students use DBT skills to help themselves and provide emotional support for their peers. <image:title>Freshmen Daily Well-Being During COVID-19 - Children’s Picture Books & Emotions</image:title>
<image:caption>Summary: This study looks at the effects of children's books on the development of empathy and emotion regulation in elementary students. Specifically, we will compare students' empathy levels after teachers read emotion-centered books, like When Sadness Is at Your Door or One Wave at a Time, in one classroom, versus popular, silly titles, like Dragons Love Tacos, in another. More broadly, this research aims to explore how accessible, affordable, and scalable interventions, such as children's literature, can effectively enhance children's well-being in classroom settings. <image:title>Meta-analysis of Peer-counseling - Meta-analysis of Peer-counseling</image:title>
<image:caption>Summary: Traditional in-person psychotherapies are proving incapable of addressing mental health needs globally. Fundamentally new approaches are needed to increase access to effective mental health care in an economic, feasible, and scalable manner. Peer-counseling and task-sharing, where mental health care is provided by non-specialist providers (e.g., nurses, clergy, peers, community members), have been explored as strategies for overcoming human resource shortages in low resource settings. The current study seeks to explore the literature related to this promising approach to closing the large gap between mental health treatment need and actual treatment received. <image:title>Traumatic Invalidation - Traumatic Invalidation</image:title>
<image:caption>Summary: This study looks at the effects of invalidation on the development of psychopathology symptoms for survivors of trauma. For this study, we are developing a measure based on Marsh Linehan’s (1997) six levels of validation. The study will seek to gain a more in depth look at what types of invalidation are most harmful for survivors of trauma, as well as how teaching validation practices to loved ones could alter disclosure experiences. <image:title>Probabilistic Reasoning to Identify Delusions - Using Probabilistic Reasoning to Identify Delusions</image:title>
<image:caption>Summary: This project will explore whether participants with a diagnosis of schizophrenia can use probabilistic reasoning to select between two choices. The intervention will be delivered through a phone application that allows users to play two variants of a simple game. If subjects can compute conditional probabilities, then posterior computation can perhaps be used to support individuals who experience delusions, as suggested in our article linked below.
